What we do
We make theatrical dance for everyone. We perform in both traditional and non-traditional spaces, integrating music, dance and visual design to cinematic levels.
We do things differently - we believe in equality, acceptance and kindness and aim to reflect this in our work and actions with others.
Touring
We tour to small-mid scale venues and to non-theatrical spaces on the rural touring circuit including village halls, school halls, and converted churches.
We approach ‘small-scale’ as an exciting genre of theatre-making, where audiences experience our work close-up, viscerally and personally. It has also encouraged us to make flexible, easy to tour, bookable work.
We utilise high-tech and low-tech production elements to conjure up a magical world that fits in small scale venues but has the quality and impact of a larger scale touring production. For non-theatrical space our works are technically self-contained and easy to travel and install, but do not compromise artistic ambition and production values.
Dance on film
We collaborate with film makers and directors to make exciting and unique dance films.
We want the films we make to say something special about the world we live in, encourage people to think differently and also share the fun we have whilst making them.
Working with the community
We make spaces for everyone to have a creative voice with kindness and laughter.
We work with students of all ages, professional dancers, community groups and schools, and support small communities to experience dance and performance with our casting workshops.
We believe dance is for everyone no matter your background, age, ability or experience, including you - get in touch!
Mentoring
We like to give young artists and emerging professionals a leg up through our mentorship programmes. The kind of support we offer ranges from meetings over a coffee to year long internships inside our company.
The types of activity we offer include - helpful choreographic feedback in the studio with our Artistic Directors; strategy meetings with our Producer; dancing and performing alongside our professional dancers or bespoke mentoring that fits what you need. We understand the dance world can feel intimidating, our team offers friendly, supportive and energising experiences.
The Mayakaras youth dance company
The Mayakaras was established in 2006 through a partnership with Instep Dance Company, Hythe, Kent and Brockhill Park Perfroming Arts College. The company was formed to celebrate the talent, vitality and diversity of Instep dancers. We work with this company every year through intensive annual commissions, artistic mentorship and support.
